Will it be done in the same visit?
In most cases yes. The ear is examined first, and if the wax is soft enough it is removed in the same sitting. If it is very hard, or if the eardrum is inflamed or perforated, we prescribe softening drops for a few days first — that is safer than forcing it out.
Can I just use ear drops or a syringe at home?
Over-the-counter softening drops are reasonable for mild wax, but home syringing is not advisable — if you have a perforated eardrum or an infection you cannot see, flushing water in can make things considerably worse. Cotton buds should be avoided entirely.
Is it safe for children and elderly patients?
Yes. Micro-suction is the preferred method for both, precisely because it is done under vision and does not involve pushing water into the ear. Children are examined gently and we stop if a child is distressed.
Will my hearing come back immediately?
If reduced hearing was purely due to the wax blockage, most people notice the difference the moment the canal is cleared. If hearing is still reduced afterwards, that points to something else — and we will check the eardrum and, if needed, arrange a hearing test.
