Why is my ear still discharging after taking antibiotics?

Can an ear infection cause permanent hearing loss?
A single treated infection usually does not. Repeated or long-standing middle-ear infection can damage the eardrum and the tiny hearing bones behind it, and that damage can be permanent. This is exactly why chronic discharge should not be left to run for years.
Is it safe to swim or bathe with an ear infection?
Keep water out of the ear while it is infected, and especially if there is a perforation. That means avoiding swimming and taking care while bathing. We will tell you what precautions apply in your specific case.
Do I need to come back for a follow-up?
For an infected or discharging ear, usually yes — the canal often needs cleaning more than once before it settles, and the eardrum needs to be re-checked once the discharge stops. Follow-up after 3 days is chargeable.
